English Recap: Teach You a Lesson: The Sorrow Behind a Power Fantasy Most students are willing to learn. The trouble comes from a small minority — a difficult home, a pattern of behaviour hardened over years — and it is this handful that erodes the order of a whole classroom. I once taught as a substitute at a vocational high school. Phones had been collected and the rules made clear, yet one student pulled out a second phone and played a game in open view. I was furious; my hand came down hard on his desk, and a curse slipped out. It was not for show. Afterwards, though, a teacher's anger wounds the teacher most. I kept asking whether I had crossed a line, left with a sadness I could not name — a feeling that, in time, pushed me out of teaching altogether. On the surface, Teach You a Lesson is a power fantasy: an inspector walks in, and whoever needs disciplining gets disciplined. Yet a worn-down teacher, watching the bullies meet their reckoning, cannot help but exhale — not from the thrill of it, but because the scene presses on a helplessness that has gone unchanged for years. The Korea Federation of Teachers' Associations called the series "sorrow, regret, and catharsis," insisting teachers need legal protection, not an outlaw's fists. On the day I slammed that desk, no one told me what to do next; the system offers only "you've worked hard." The drama unfolds after South Korea's 2010 ban on corporal punishment, when a law meant to protect students became a shield for delinquents. Taiwan is no better — the recent teacher suicides here are structural, not isolated. A line in the drama says protecting teachers matters as much as protecting students. In reality, that cannot be done. What saddens me is not the violence. It is that I understand, completely, where the catharsis comes from.
