While this idea may hold true in certain situations, it is not universally applicable. In many cases, the absence of news can lead to uncertainty and anxiety rather than comfort. Whether this phrase is valid depends largely on the specific situation.
On one hand, "No news is good news" can be accurate in some contexts. For example, if a police officer does not receive any emergency calls, it indicates that no crimes or accidents have occurred. Since the general public typically seeks police assistance only in times of trouble, the lack of calls suggests that everything is under control. Similarly, the same logic applies to firefighters—if there are no emergency alarms, it means there are no fires or disasters requiring immediate response. In these cases, silence often implies that all is well.
However, the absence of news is not always reassuring. For instance, in a college setting, professors often assign group projects, and students create chat groups to facilitate communication. Sometimes, all members remain silent because no one wants to be the first to speak and take on the role of leader. Since being a leader entails extra responsibilities, everyone avoids breaking the ice. As a result, if no one initiates the discussion, the group may fall behind schedule, leading to anxiety and negatively impacting academic performance.
In conclusion, while "No news is good news" may offer reassurance in certain situations, it is not a universal truth. The impact of silence depends on the context. In an era where communication is frequent and expected, a lack of news can sometimes be more distressing than comforting.
