The Present Moment Is Transformation We have always assumed that time is linear—that it has a beginning and an end, and that past, present, and future are fixed concepts that feel truly real. So after anything bad happens, our habitual reaction is to “worry about what will happen next,” rather than immediately “change the negative thought.” For example, if we quarrel with a colleague today, we begin to worry that the relationship will worsen, that the other person may hold a grudge, that they will surely make trouble for us later, that we should start taking measures to protect ourselves now, and so on—countless “worrying imaginings.” Then past experience is once again used as a coping strategy—the same unchanging way of handling things—and as a result, in a self-fulfilling prophecy, our worry is proven right again. In fact, if we are willing to try another way of thinking—after something happens, not imagining any bad thoughts, but simply and quietly abiding in the present moment—we keep bringing the mind back to reflect: Have I become aware of the “uncomfortable habitual tendency” in this moment? Have I discovered the “treasure” that the situation is trying to remind me of? Have I recognized that this is again a “repeated lesson”? Have I clearly observed the “changes in emotion,” and have I thought about other ways to “resolve” it? Then, with positive intention, we instead give thanks and express gratitude to the colleague who is interacting and playing the scene with us, and wish that they may reflect and resonate with us in this moment and grow together. In this way, we have a very high probability of welcoming a gentler and more favorable turn of events. This is “transformation in the present moment.”
