Screening Event of "Eternal Spring" and Post Screening Talk will take place on November 23rd (Thursday) at 18:30 in Lecture Hall R332 of the Life Science Building!
In March 2002, a state TV station in China was hijacked by members of the outlawed spiritual group Falun Gong, aiming to counter the government narrative about their practice. In the aftermath, comic book illustrator Daxiong, a Falun Gong practitioner, is forced to flee to North America. He blames the hijacking for worsening the suppression, but his views are challenged when he meets the lone surviving participant to have escaped China, now living in Seoul, South Korea. Combining present-day footage with 3D animation inspired by Daxiong’s art, Eternal Spring retraces the event on its 20th anniversary, bringing to life an unprecedented story of defiance, harrowing eyewitness accounts, and determination to speak up for political and religious freedoms.
"The Changchun Event" has become the first Chinese-language film to represent Canada in the race for the Best International Feature Film category at the 2023 Oscars. Additionally, it has been selected as one of the films for the 2023 Taiwan International Human Rights Film Festival.
Everyone is welcome to share the information with friends and family, not only to appreciate the high artistic value of the work but also to participate in the post-screening discussion. Ms. Chia-Yi Chan, a researcher at New School Democracy, will join us for the post-screening discussion. Feel free to join and discuss, gaining a deeper understanding of human rights issues!
